Benn On Staying Active Ahead Of Prograis Clash

Conor Benn confirmed he is deliberately staying active rather than waiting for his mandatory title shot, as he faces two-time 140-lb champion Regis Prograis on Saturday.

By taking this fight, Benn is risking his WBC #1 mandatory position for the welterweight title currently held by Ryan Garcia. Benn’s departure from Matchroom Boxing to sign a $15 million one-fight deal with Zuffa Boxing was designed with one goal: securing a fight with Ryan Garcia in a UK stadium.

The WBC officially named Benn the mandatory challenger after Garcia captured the welterweight title from Mario Barrios in February 2026. If Benn loses on Saturday, the plans for a “Garcia vs. Benn” stadium show in London would effectively evaporate. That is a risk Conor is willing to take.

"I could have waited for Garcia. Do I wait or do I stay active? I like that risk. I want the biggest fights. There isn’t any bigger fight than me and Ryan," Benn said

Is It A Good Move?

Benn is the flagship signing for Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing. To justify a $15 million one-fight deal, he needs to prove he is a massive draw who doesn’t just wait for easy wins. Taking a "banana skin" fight like Prograis builds a narrative of "anyone, anywhere," which makes the eventually Garcia fight an even bigger commercial fight.

If Prograis pulls the upset tonight, the Ryan Garcia fight—and the $15M Zuffa payday—vanishes. Garcia has already expressed interest in other big names like Shakur Stevenson. A loss for Benn would likely see the WBC skip him in the rankings, and Garcia would have no reason to travel to London for a "stadium show" against a defeated challenger.

This fight is at a 150 lb catchweight. While Benn is a natural welterweight, Prograis believes this weight actually benefits him, as he won’t be as drained as he was in his recent 140 lb outings. Benn is essentially fighting a former world champion at a weight that might give the veteran a second wind.
