Canelo Could Face Munguia, Then Benavidez, Jermall Charlo Slams Showtime For Boycotting Him

In some top boxing news, Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent could be Jaime Munguia in a battle of two undefeated Mexican fighters.
That is according to ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez. The move would be part of Alvarez’s three-fight deal with the PBC, following his win over Jermell Charlo, leaving the boxer with two more fights.
Canelo’s Next Fights
And provided that Alvarez does manage to overcome Munguia, there is an expectation that he could face David Benavidez in the summer.
The latter is the current WBC super middleweight interim champion, who has held the mandatory postion for over a year. But before that can happen, Munguia will be facing John Ryder in January. And provided that the boxer comes out victorious, then a bout on Cinco De Mayo weekend may open up.
"The remaining fights of the agreement would take place in May and September of next year, contemplating a possible battle against David Benavidez for [September], as long as he wins against Demetrius Andrade this November 25. Those two fights would be distributed by Showtime PPV," Rodriguez stated
Charlo Slams Showtime
Meanwhile, Jermall Charlo has hit out at Showtime’s failure to hold a press conference for his bout with Jose Benavidez Jr. on November 25th, 2023.
The bout will see the WBC middleweight champion return to the ring after more than two years out, following his win over Juan Macias Montiel.
And as part of that process, the boxer had been struggling with mental health issues as there were serious question marks over whether he would return to the sport.
And yet, it was only this year that Charlo had been linked with fighting Canelo Alvarez only for the boxer’s brother, Jermell Charlo, to take the fight.
But given that Jermall’s comeback has been marked by working alongside Roy Jones Jr. the middleweight champion was disappointed by the lack of coverage he was getting.
"Showtime, they don’t do me no press conference. They don’t do nothing for me, and they ain’t told y’all I’m fighting yet. I’m back. Is Showtime trying to boycott me or whatever? They haven’t told me when I’m fighting. I’ll be fighting on November 25th. You can judge me how you want, but I’ll be back on November 25th. I’m getting better every day".
Nevertheless, it is important to bear in mind the following points. Showtime did recently announce that they would be exiting boxing, which may explain why the network is being selective over the fights that they promote.
Meanwhile, Charlo is ultimately a co-main event attraction on the David Benavidez vs. Demetrius Andrade card. And given that Charlo is not facing his mandatory Carlos Adames, the perception is that the fight may not be as big as Charlo may have thought. After all, given the fighter’s time away from the ring, Charlo will need to rebuild himself moving forward.
Ultimately, Canelo and Charlo have a big few months coming up. And the only way to silence the critics is to do the talking in the ring.
