Cormier Responds To Jon Jones' USADA Comments – ‘You Can’t Rewrite History'
In the latest MMA news, Daniel Cormier has spoken about Jon Jones’ reaction to the UFC and USADA parting ways with each other.
USADA had confirmed that they would not be renewing their contract past 2023 following the CEO of the organisation Travis Tygart’s comments.
The latter was very vocal about differences between USADA and the UFC that emerged after Conor McGregor enrolment into the testing pool.
The rules require that MMA fighters must provide two negative samples over a six-month period before they can be allowed to fight. And yet, it seems that there may have been attempts to avoid that. In response, Jones was very vocal about his experience with USADA.
The UFC heavyweight champion of the world was infamously pulled from his fight with Cormier in 2016. The bout was signifiant since the light heavyweight title was on the line.
This came after Jones tested positive for two substances: Clomiphene and Letrozole. And given that WADA had made those substances unlawful, Jones was given a suspension for one year.
However, in the aftermath of that process, Jones managed to show USADA that the failed test was due to a sex pill that had become contaminated. Things did not get any easier as Jones’ win over Cormier at UFC 214 was overturned.
This was due to him testing positive for Turinabol. Jones could have received a four-year ban, only to be given a 15-month suspension after cooperating with USADA. Thereafter, Jones tested positive for a picogram of Turinabol at UFC 232.
The amount was so small, as the California State Athletic Commission accepted that there was no evidence to suggest that Turinabol was in his system. In response, Jones stated the following.
Jones On USADA
"Man I survived USADA. First they said I was guilty of having picograms, then they considered me innocent, next picograms became legal. Guess what I’m still here, still unbeaten. That BS no-contest over DC (Daniel Cormier) needs to be taken off my record. I’ve never cheated this sport and I will stand by that until the Day I die," Jones said
And now Cormier has had his say on the matter. This was in response to Jones’ comments that he wanted the no contest to be removed from his record.
After all, aside from that slight blip, Jones has won every bout to put him in the argument for one of the best MMA fighters of all time.
Although that may have been the case, Cormier has questioned Jones’ comments. The former expanded on how it was more than one positive test, which cannot be overlooked.
Cormier On Jones
“People will try to rewrite history. You can’t rewrite history. There’s gonna be a time — it was multiple times (he tested positive) — you can try to rewrite history and it’ll be like during baseball there was the steroid era and all those guys don’t get to go into the Hall of Fame. Will we look back on 2015 to 2023 as the USADA era? And will these guys that had these things deal with issues going forward in terms of tainting their resume, especially if someone that is middling now becomes an absolute superstar after USADA is gone?"
