De La Hoya Wants Mayweather Rematch
Oscar De La Hoya intensified his campaign for a rematch with Floyd Mayweather.
The 53-year-old De La Hoya claimed that their 2007 encounter included a rematch clause that was legally binding for exactly 365 days. Oscar alleges that the 2007 contract mandated a rematch if requested within one year. According to De La Hoya, Floyd stayed in retirement for "one year and one day" specifically to ensure the legal obligation vanished.
While Oscar looks physically fit in training clips, analysts have raised concerns about a 53-year-old returning after an 18-year hiatus. Unlike Mayweather (49), who has remained active in the exhibition circuit, De La Hoya’s long layoff and well-documented personal struggles add a layer of significant risk to a 2026 return. Oscar’s call-out comes at a chaotic time for Mayweather, who is currently embroiled in a dispute over his upcoming September 19 clash with Manny Pacquiao at the Sphere in Las Vegas.
Conflicting reports suggest the Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch was intended to be a professional bout, but Mayweather is reportedly pushing to keep it as an exhibition. De La Hoya has offered himself as an opponent for Jake Paul if the Mayweather fight doesn’t materialize.
De La Hoya Reacts
"Mayweather, come on, dude. Fight a real fight. You’re still trying to protect your 0? Yes, you’re 50-0 on paper, but people know you’ve lost. Your own father said you lost against me when we fought. What’s crazy is people don’t know that we had a rematch clause for one year, and what do you do?
"Your [expletive] retires for one year and one day.“Ever since I got beat up by Manny Pacquiao in my last fight, I’ve wanted to fight every single day, but I couldn’t because I wasn’t right physically, emotionally. All that depression I had in my spirit. These last five years I’ve put in the work. I can take on King Kong if I want and beat his ass. I’ll even fight Jake Paul. Let’s go," De La Hoya said
