Gervonta Davis Dismisses A Pitbull Cruz Rematch

Gervonta Davis has dismissed the idea of a rematch with Isaac Cruz following their 2021 clash.

The fight saw Cruz last the distance to become one of the few fighters not to have been stopped by Tank Davis. Out of the latter’s 29 wins, 27 have come by way of knockout, which is why Cruz’s performance was praised. The Mexican’s come-forward style did test Davis’ resolve.

However, in the aftermath of the fight, it turned out that Davis had injured his hand. Therefore, the performance suggested that a weakened Davis still managed to keep Cruz at bay. And yet, ‘Pitbull’ has been calling for a rematch ever since then, something Davis’ coach, Calvin Ford, was open to seeing. However, Davis, the boxer, has ruled that out.

Davis On Cruz

"I beat your a** with one hand rock head," Davis

The anticipation to see Davis making a comeback has been growing ever since his recent release from prison for violating the terms of his house arrest in relation to a hit-and-run incident. The boxer, though, did confirm that he would not be fighting again this year.

Meanwhile, following Devin Haney’s decision to vacate all of his lightweight belts, Davis will be elevated from his status of a WBA ‘regular’ champion to that of a full champion. That is likely to make Davis a target for fighters chasing a world title. Outside of Pitbull, the names in the division that would make big fights include Vasiliy Lomachenko and Shakur Stevenson.

Other Fights

The former is being linked with a fight against George Kambosos Jr. for the vacant IBF belt. Meanwhile, Stevenson is the current WBC champion who has made it clear that he wants to be undisputed. However, his last performance against Edwin De Los Santos failed to resonate with the boxing public as he was booed throughout despite winning the belt.

"I had a lot going on in that fight, but I got the job done. We came out victorious. I had a good fighter in front of me. Me beating a good fighter on a night like that is a testament to how great I truly am. “We’ll see. I’m the champion now. I want the belts. My goal is to go grab every belt one by one, and become undisputed the hard way. I want to do something that [hasn’t been done before]. Has that been done before?" Stevenson said

Nevertheless, Davis did make it clear that he was not happy about being elevated to a full WBA champion. With that, the boxer will have to contend with mandatory obligations, thus removing the freedom he would have otherwise had to pick and choose the fights that he wants.

In addition, another belt simply means more sanctioning fees, something which will reduce the size of the purse that the fighters require. And that is likely to have an impact on the way Davis navigates his fights moving forward.
