Teofimo Lopez's Fresh Start At 147

Teofimo Lopez has finalized his transition to the 147-pound division, marking the start of his quest for a world title in a third weight class.

The move follows a challenging start to the year for Lopez, who lost his WBO Junior Welterweight Title to Shakur Stevenson via a clinical unanimous decision in January. Rather than pursuing other fights at 140 lbs, "The Takeover" is looking to reinvent himself among the welterweight elite.

Rumors suggest that Lopez is the next major star set to join the Zuffa Boxing stable. Lopez has made it clear that he isn’t interested in a slow build-up; he has set his sights on the biggest names at the top of the WBC rankings. The reigning WBC Welterweight Champion is Lopez’s ultimate goal.

A victory here would cement Teofimo’s legacy as a three-weight world champion.  Should a direct shot at Garcia remain out of reach, Lopez has identified Conor Benn as the perfect "gatekeeper" to the throne. Since Benn is the WBC’s #1 mandatory following his victory over Regis Prograis, a "Lopez vs. Benn" eliminator would be a big non-title fight.

Is It The Right Move?

While his loss to Stevenson in January raised questions about his consistency, a move to 147 lbs allows a physically larger Teofimo to fight without the grueling weight cuts that hampered his stamina in the past. If the "Zuffa" deal comes to fruition, the welterweight division could be on course for major fights.

Lopez has also previously said he will keep his current coaching set up, despite calls on him to sack his father Lopez Sr. Lopez’s decision suggests that he remains confident of becoming a world champion again.

Lopez’s Mindset

"I was too focused on one particular thing [instead of] really enjoying what I could see opening. I was catching him with the body shots a lot, that was effective, but [I needed] more combinations. I did poorly [by] not listening to my team. That’s on me. Take it on the chin. My team did a phenomenal job, they had great guidelines and instructions, I just didn’t listen tonight … I knew about his jab … I was playing too much to his game, that’s all," Lopez revealed
