Who Is Shakur Stevenson's Toughest Opponent?

Shakur Stevenson identified William Zepeda as the opponent who pushed him the most.

Prior to that summer clash, Stevenson had been bashed by critics who labeled his style as boring. To silence the noise, he made a tactical gamble that many thought would be his undoing: he chose to stand his ground and trade in the pocket. Zepeda entered the ring with an undefeated record backed by 27 knockouts.

Rather than using his lateral movement, Stevenson fought much of the contest in the pocket. Although he was rocked by a jab early on, he slipped the majority of Zepeda’s power shots while countering with precision, finishing the night with a 52% connect rate—nearly doubling Zepeda’s 28%. The scorecards reflected that: 118-110 (x2) and 119-109.

The Impact

The victory effectively ended the narrative that Stevenson "runs" from a fight. Stevenson now measures all future challenges against that fight. In his view, if Zepeda’s relentless output couldn’t crack his composure, no other current contender at 135 or 140 lbs possesses the tools to do so. Since that win, Stevenson dominated Teofimo Lopez to secure his fourth divisional title, further validating his claim that he has already survived his "toughest" test.

Zepeda forced Shakur to abandon his comfort zone. It was a "mental" war where Stevenson had to resist the urge to circle out and instead fight a high-risk, high-reward battle on the inside. If Zepeda’s 1,000-punch output couldn’t break him, no one can.

While the scorecards against Teofimo were similarly wide (119-109), Lopez possessed the one-punch "equalizer" power and athleticism that Zepeda lacked. In the Lopez fight, Stevenson returned to a more disciplined style, utilizing a jab to dominate a naturally larger man.

"It ain’t going to happen [somebody having a close fight against me]. The most y’all ever going to get is Zepeda – that was y’all’s best hope and chance at getting resistance. “His style, styles make fights. The style that would give me the most resistance would be the guy who throws a million punches a round, and doesn’t stop punching," Stevenson said
