UFC Winnipeg results: Malott stops Burns, sends him to retirement
Mike Malott sent Gilbert Burns into retirement with a third-round stoppage at UFC Winnipeg on Saturday night.
The 34-year-old Canadian landed repeated uppercuts to drop Burns at 2:08 of the final frame, per MMA Fighting’s live coverage. Malott controlled distance with his jab through the first two rounds, then unloaded a combination that floored the veteran Brazilian. Ground strikes followed and referee Herb Dean waved it off. Afterward, a tearful Burns left his gloves in the center of the cage.
Burns calls time on 10-year UFC run
Burns addressed the crowd in his final speech. “I work so hard. I work very hard for these fights. I know Mike was going to fight at home and he was going to bring everything,” he said, according to MMA Fighting. The 39-year-old thanked Dana White, Sean Shelby, and the broadcast team before his family joined him in the cage. The loss was his fifth in a row dating back to 2023, a skid that included defeats to Michael Morales, Jack Della Maddalena, and Belal Muhammad.
Malott called Burns “one of the greatest legends in the sport inside and outside the cage” during his post-fight interview, as MMA Mania reported. The win was his fourth straight and pushed his UFC record to 7-1. He earned a $100,000 post-fight bonus and will slide into Burns’ No. 11 ranking slot at welterweight. Malott becomes only the third Canadian fighter to headline an event on home soil, joining Georges St-Pierre and Rory MacDonald.
In the co-main, Charles Jourdain outworked Kyler Phillips to remain unbeaten at bantamweight. Marcio Barbosa knocked out Dennis Buzukja 80 seconds into his UFC debut and also collected $100,000. Jai Herbert rallied to stop Mandel Nallo in a wild lightweight bout.
Malott declined to call anyone out when asked who he wanted next but will likely face a Top 10 opponent in his next outing.
